However, if your mattress or other furniture is clearly the infestation’s “ground zero” and loaded with bugs and harborage (nesting) areas, seriously consider throwing it out. If you do remove a mattress, be sure to wrap it in plastic so nothing falls off as you move it through the house!
Also, you want to take all reasonable steps to ensure that your rooms are sealed up tightly to contain the heat and the heat is able to circulate around properly inside.
Density and clutter are biggest enemies of heat and a bed bug’s best friend. So be sure to de-clutter your things! You will be creating a vortex of air, so removing clutter and securing loose paperwork from being blow around by the fans is very important.
Consider putting your nightstand drawers between your mattress and box spring to reduce density. Large stacks of boxes should be separated and the lids taken off.
DON’T move any personal belongings to your car, garage, basement, a friend or family member’s house, storage lockers or other places. Assume everything can be and is infested with bed bugs until properly treated or inspected.
Keep linens on beds and furniture. Moving them can agitate the bugs and make them scurry about unnecessarily, leading to a spread to other areas.
Don’t move electronics. Our heat treatment will not damage electronics like laptops or televisions. Electronics are especially susceptible to infestation, so it is important these items stay in place. When treating, just be sure not to point a heater directly at technology. If there are any doubts about your electronics, we recommend checking manuals or contacting the manufacturer.

In the case of a bed bug, they will die 100% of the time when exposed to 120 degree temperatures for three to four minutes. Bed bug eggs will not hatch 100% of the time when exposed to 120°F for five to six minutes. The bare minimum bed bug kill temperature is 113°F held for a 12-24 hour period of time. what to do after a heat treatment for bed bugs south florida?
Once the bed bug heat treatment has been completed, we recommend staying out of your South Florida home or apartment unit until temperatures have reduced to normal levels. This can take a few hours unless you open windows to expedite the cool down process. Once temperatures reduce to 90 degrees or so, it will be safe to turn on your air conditioning system and carry on with your normal household activities. The bed bug heating process is 100% organic, so there are no chemical residues to clean up at all!

- Carefully inspect and sanitize all clothing, shoes, purses, luggage, etc. brought with you during the treatment and have freshly laundered clothes ready to wear before re-entry.
- During the bed bug heat treatment, you may have moved around some of your furniture or other larger items to distribution of heat was even in all areas. It too hot to put things back during the treatment, so now is a good time to do that.
- We recommend vacuuming thoroughly and using your normal cleaning products to wipe everything down. When vacuuming is finished, take care to rinse out the dust collector or, if it has a collection bag, throw it away. If you moved some of your furniture around during the treatment, we strongly encourage vacuuming up under their footprints before the furniture is returned to its normal position.
- Wash and dry all folded up clothes, bed sheets, blankets and linens stored inside dressers or closets on high heat if already done. It is not necessary to launder clothes that hang in closets.
- Consider a chemical follow up treatment or heavily spray all high risk cracks and crevices using a 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water mixture. Do this every few days for about two weeks. I call this "bed bug insurance!"

If you want to pick up your bed bug heating system from us, in most cases, it can fit inside a car assuming the trunk and back seat areas are cleaned out. Each bed bug heater and/or air moving fan is the size of a medium sized suitcase. So you can fit these heaters in almost any vehicle, along with a box of wires. Just be sure to close the vents in the treatment room to ensure cold air from the air conditioning is not pumping into the room you are heating up. This is especially true if you have confirmed bed bugs have gotten into your home. The good news is that it is usually much easier to deal with them inside a car versus inside an entire home. If you have read through our website at all, you have learned that heat is what kills bed bugs instantly. So the next question you ask yourself is… “We live in Florida, does a car get hot enough to kill bed bugs?”
Summer Months
That answer depends: In South Florida, during the summertime, your car will easily reach 130F+ degrees when parked outside all day, with the windows up. So thankfully, your car should be much less likely to develop a bed bug infestation during our summer hotter months and the car will likely cure itself if the critters happen to find their way inside. You shouldn’t need to use bed bug heaters in your car during this time.
Cooler Months
The rest of the year can be a problem. The colder months in South Florida will easily allow bed bugs to live in your vehicle and have a regular source of food, usually your legs.

The rest of the year can be a problem. As you know, bed bugs hitchhike by nature, so they can easily crawl off your clothing, purse, backpack, etc., and nest underneath your driver’s seat or near a seam where plastic trim meets the carpet. The colder months in South Florida will easily allow bed bugs to live in your vehicle and have a regular source of food, usually your legs.
During colder months, you should seriously consider doing a bed bug heat treatment in your car.
How Do You kill Bed Bugs In Your Car?
- Clean it out and throw away all trash and debris. Remove any personal belongings and thoroughly inspect them (but do not bring them into the house!)
- Vacuum the entire car really well, paying close attention to the seats and where the plastic trim pieces meet the carpeting.
- Place the bed bug heater on a flat surface, usually a folded down back seat, and secure the heater with bungee cords so it won’t move or tip over. If you have a larger vehicle (like a van or SUV), consider using the heater and one air moving fan as well.
- Plug in one or two heater element wires and route all wires through a cracked open window. Place a towel along the window opening and gently close it, sealing the gap to eliminate heat escape as best you can.
- Plug in all wires into the home’s electrical supply and use extension cords as necessary. It is always a good idea to park as close to the house as possible!
- Heat the car the same way as a room… run the bed bug heater until you have achieved the 120 degree bed bug kill temperature, then run it at least four more hours. This process should go quite a bit faster than a room treatment.
- After the treatment and cool down is complete, vacuum again and clean out the vacuum's collection bin or throw away the bag.
- Consider heavily spraying a 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water mixture along all seams, nooks and crannies as a precaution. You could also spray a pesticide, but do not let it make contact with an area you touch with your body. Another messier option would be to lightly dust with diatomaceous earth into cracks, seams, cup holders, all upholstery and carpeting. Be sure not to get the powder wet or it renders it useless.
