 There are a number of industry best practices to consider when prepping for a bed bug heat treatment.  Some of these tasks are required in all cases and some are considered elective, depending on your situation.  Common sense is typically the name of the game.  Don’t let it overwhelm you, in many cases, less-is-more. 
 
All bed bug heat treatment preparation steps should taken before the bed bug heating equipment arrives at your Tampa Bay area home!  You should leave everything inside to be treated except for heat sensitive items or things you will be throwing away. These are industry best practices and will aid in a successful heat treatment.
 
Heat from the treatment will penetrate and kill every bed bug and egg that it reaches and is designed to save your belongings from the trash heap.  However, if your mattress or other furniture is clearly the infestation’s “ground zero” and loaded with bugs and harborage (nesting) areas, seriously consider throwing it out.  If you do remove a mattress, be sure to wrap it in plastic so nothing falls off as you move it through the house!
 
Also, you want to take all reasonable steps to ensure that your rooms are sealed up tightly to contain the heat and the heat is able to circulate around properly inside. 
 
Density and clutter are biggest enemies of heat and a bed bug’s best friend.  So be sure to de-clutter your things!  You will be creating a vortex of air, so removing clutter and securing loose paperwork from being blow around by the fans is very important. 
 
Consider putting your nightstand drawers between your mattress and box spring to reduce density.  Large stacks of boxes should be separated and the lids taken off.

DON’T move any personal belongings to your car, garage, basement, a friend or family member’s house, storage lockers or other places.  Assume everything can be and is infested with bed bugs until properly treated or inspected.
Keep linens on beds and furniture. Moving them can agitate the bugs and make them scurry about unnecessarily, leading to a spread to other areas.

Don’t move electronics. Our heat treatment will not damage electronics like laptops or televisions. Electronics are especially susceptible to infestation, so it is important these items stay in place. When treating, just be sure not to point a heater directly at technology.  If there are any doubts about your electronics, we recommend checking manuals or contacting the manufacturer.

how long does a bed bug heat treatment take in ST AUGUSTINE?
​Plan on 16-24 hours per heat treatment from start to finish.  Maybe it is 12 hours, maybe it is 24 hours.  “It depends”.  The scientific answer to when the heat treatment is over is:  “A minimum four hours after the entire area you are treating achieves 120 degrees.”  You can always let the system run longer and hotter, you can never shut it off too early.
 
It typically takes a properly sized heating system between 7-12 hours to increase from a normal room temperature to bed bug kill temperature.  Once the magic number of 120 degrees is reached everywhere in the room, the system must be allowed to run at least four more hours to allow all that bed bug killing heat to permeate into all the furniture, belongings and behind the drywall in order to kill bed bugs in those difficult to reach places. This bed bug killing process is very effective, however it cannot be rushed. 
 
Every situation is different.  If your Florida home is brand new, has great insulation, double pane hurricane windows, low ceilings, is empty, your bed bug heat treatment will go rather quickly.  If you have an older home with leaky windows and large amounts of clutter in the room, the process will take a few hours longer.  If you use a larger capacity heating system in a smaller room it will naturally go faster.   The golden rule of this process is “Do Not Rush Your Heat Treatment!”

WHAT TEMPERATURE MUST BE REACHED TO KILL BED BUGS when doing a heat treatment in ST AUGUSTINE?

what to do after a heat treatment for bed bugs in ST AUGUSTINE?
Once the bed bug heat treatment has been completed, we recommend staying out of your home or apartment unit until temperatures have reduced to normal levels.  This can take a few hours unless you open windows to expedite the cool down process.  Once temperatures reduce to 90 degrees or so, it will be safe to turn on your air conditioning system and carry on with your normal household activities.  The bed bug heating process is 100% organic, so there are no chemical residues to clean up at all!
 
You have now exterminated your bed bug problem. Now what?  Clean up!  Just follow our simple steps:

  • First, wrap up all your bed bug heating system cords and move all the heater fans near the front door to get them out of the way, ready to be returned.
  • Carefully inspect and sanitize all clothing, shoes, purses, luggage, etc. brought with you during the treatment and have freshly laundered clothes ready to wear before re-entry.
  • During the bed bug heat treatment, you may have moved around some of your furniture or other larger items to distribution of heat was even in all areas. It too hot to put things back during the treatment, so now is a good time to do that. 
  • We recommend vacuuming thoroughly and using your normal cleaning products to wipe everything down.  When vacuuming is finished, take care to rinse out the dust collector or, if it has a collection bag, throw it away.  If you moved some of your furniture around during the treatment, we strongly encourage vacuuming up under their footprints before the furniture is returned to its normal position. 
  • Wash and dry all folded up clothes, bed sheets, blankets and linens stored inside dressers or closets on high heat if already done. It is not necessary to launder clothes that hang in closets. 
  • Consider a chemical follow up treatment or heavily spray all high risk cracks and crevices using a 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water mixture.  Do this every few days for about two weeks.  I call this "bed bug insurance!"

In many cases, yes!  We do everything possible to have heating systems available for our customers when they want to pick them up.  For delivery to you, same day service can occasionally be accommodated, however, we prefer at least a day or two notice when possible.  Depending on how busy we are, we may need to schedule the heat treatment for a few days after you call us. WHAT ABOUT CHEMICAL BED BUG SPRAY TREATMENT?
​Seems easy enough… a quick bed bug spray around the house will cure the problem, right?  Absolutely wrong!  It is a very good idea to apply a high quality, bed bug rated pesticide after a heat treatment to provide a residual killing barrier once the heat is gone.  I call this “bed bug insurance” in the unlikely, but statistically possible chance that a bed bug remained following a heat treatment.  We can provide you the names of the best and latest bed bug rated chemical products that are available to do this.  When getting your estimates and planning a bed bug treatment that works best for you (hopefully us), don’t ever let a professional pest control company tell you they can exterminate a bed bug problem with a single liquid treatment using only a bed bug spray.  They are either not a properly trained bed bug control technician or they are simply dishonest.
 
Conventional liquid bed bug treatments have not been found to eliminate bed bugs in all life stages in a single treatment, especially the eggs. To attempt a complete elimination via chemical, an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach must be taken, which includes 3-4 chemical treatments being performed over span of several weeks.  The additional treatments are needed to target bed bug babies (nymphs) that will eventually hatch form their eggs after the initial treatment, since sprays do not kill eggs.  Each chemical pesticide bed bug treatment will require the property owner to prepare for each application, which will most certainly include purchasing bed bug mattress covers and the laundering all your clothes, bedding, towels and other linens multiple times over a number of weeks.
 
If you were thinking about trying a DIY spray, virtually every bed bug spray at Walmart or off the shelf at Home Depot will simply not work… bed bugs evolve so efficiently that they quickly become immune to these high volume, low strength chemical bed bug sprays.  These sprays and foggers will certainly kill off some of the bugs and help keep the population in check, but unfortunately, they will never cure the infestation 100%.  To make matters worse, some chemical sprays are repellants (meaning bed bugs don’t like the way they smell) and this causes them to burrow deeper into the walls and bedding to get away from the smell.  A high quality bed bug pesticide is non-repellant, meaning the bed bug cannot smell it and thus more likely to cross over it to die.
 
The biggest fallacies of using bed bug sprays (pyrethroids), outside of their toxic nature, is the before-mentioned resistance to active ingredients in these chemicals, but also the bed bug eggs will not be killed by them and pest control exterminators must pull apart and dissect your entire room to find the bugs where they hide. 
 
A bed bug heat treatment only requires one treatment because the heat is able to permeate through the treatment area, including through furniture and behind drywall, to kill all stages of the bed bug lifecycle, including eggs. There will be some minor prep work involved prior to heating, however, it is typically easier to prep for a one-time heat treatment compared to many chemical treatments.  Simply put, bed bugs can never develop a resistance to heat!  SEE OUR BED BUG HEATER RENTAL PACKAGES
will bed bugs spread to other areas of my house?
​Eventually yes, if left untreated or unnoticed.  The primary method bedbugs transport themselves around your home is by hitchhiking on you, your luggage, backpacks, purses, jackets, clothes or, much less likely, via your pets.  They don’t have wings and they don’t jump.  They can, however, move rather quickly across the floor if needed.
 
Let’s say you had some out of town family stay in your guest room and they introduced bed bugs into that room.  Assuming the room stays empty once they leave, the bed bugs won’t have a food supply close by.  Since bed bugs can survive for one and a half years without a blood meal, the next person to sleep in that room will undoubtedly get eaten alive by very hungry bed bugs! 
If no one enters or exits the guest room regularly, they will likely spend weeks to months in that room before eventually migrating out of the guest room in search of a blood meal, so they don’t starve to death.  They will slowly work their way into the next closest area that human beings occupy regularly, like a living room couch area or an adjacent bedroom.  They can do this by sensing your body heat and the CO2 that we exhale with every breath. 
 
If, for example, bed bugs found their way into your master bedroom by hitchhiking in some luggage taken on a recent vacation, they will begin to multiply quite rapidly since they have a regular supply of food in that room, you.  However, because their food supply is readily available, they are much less likely to leave the master bedroom in search of new food.  This is especially true in situations where the master bedroom is separate from the other rooms in split floor plan housing layouts. 
 
If the bed bugs entered your son’s room and your daughter’s room shares a common wall, bed bugs will absolutely work their way from your son’s room into your daughter’s room.  It may take weeks or a couple of months, but as the unnoticed or untreated population continues growing larger and larger in your son’s room, the bugs will start searching for food elsewhere.  In these cases, it is paramount that you heat treat both bedrooms.  ​SEE OUR BED BUG HEATER RENTAL PACKAGES
​how to check for bed bugs in my ST AUGUSTINE fl house?
​Bed bugs are masters at hiding and are nocturnal by nature, meaning they come out at night when we are sleeping.  They have the uncanny ability to sense our body heat and our carbon dioxide expelled with every breath we take.  As a result, bed bugs typically live within five feet of our beds or couches.  We are their primary food source, so getting easy access to us is paramount.  Despite knowing this, bed bugs can still make it somewhat difficult to detect them, but certainly not impossible.  With a flashlight and knowledge of their typical hiding places, you can check for bed bugs yourself.  You could also pay to hire a professional to do an inspection, however even professional bed bug inspectors fail to identify bed bug activity 50% of the time when the infestation is new or very minor.  Yikes!  A less severe infestation is usually harder to detect than one that is more advanced.  In fact, some inspectors use specially trained K-9 dogs to track down bed bugs by smell as this is by far the most accurate method of bed bug detection.  Look for the obvious:  Bites on you and/or activity in their most common hiding spots. ​The small and narrow body of bed bugs allow them to squeeze into tiny crevices such as the seams of a mattress or sofa, as well as curtain folds.  Bed Bugs are literally as flat as a credit card when they have not had a blood meal.  They even hide in the heads of screws.    

Where do bed bugs hide?  Sorry to say, but almost anywhere.  Bed bugs prefer to hide in tight spaces, such as cracks in the headboard, behind baseboards, or behind the faceplate of a light switch or electrical outlet. They may be found in sofas, cribs, futons, and car seats. There are few places that a bed bug won’t hide, so long as it is within close proximity to its food source: human blood. How to tell you have bed bugs?  Most commonly, you will find bed bugs:
  • Near mattress tags and spring boxes
  • In the cracks in the frame of the bed and headboard
  • In baseboard joints (or underneath)
  • Inside electrical sockets
  • Between sofa cushions
  • In furniture joints
  • Under unglued wallpaper
  • Under paintings and posters on the walls
  • In the seam, where wallpaper and ceiling meet
Use a flashlight and a magnifying glass to get through all these areas.
Check for bed bugs using these symptoms as a guide:
  • Live bedbugs that are reddish and about 1/4 inch long
  • Dark spots similar to ink pen dots are bedbug droppings
  • Reddish stains on the mattress from bugs that were crushed
  • Little, pale yellow eggs, eggshells, and yellowish exoskeleton skins that young bedbugs shed as they grow into maturity
 
Outside of the home, bed bugs can be found on busses, trains, inside cars and on airplanes, anywhere really.  People get them from used Craigslist furniture, newly rented apartments left behind by the previous tenant, boy scout cabins, schools and pre-schools (transmitted when backpacks touch each other), medical waiting rooms, hospital ERs and regularly at libraries as bed bugs like paper and hiding in the spines of books.  And I would be remised if I didn’t mention the most obvious place bed bugs are found… hotels, motels and now increasingly, AirBnB rentals.

​DO I NEED TO RENT A HOTEL ROOM DURING THE  bed bug HEAT TREATMENT?
​If you are just heat treating a single bedroom or two, you can stay in your home during the bed bug treatment if you choose.  Just be sure to close the vents in the treatment room to ensure cold air from the air conditioning is not pumping into the room you are heating up.  Also know that you will hear a slight humming noise from the sound of the fans, even with the bedroom door closed.  Almost everyone in this situation will choose to stay home without issue. 
 
If you are treating the main living area, such as the living room, dining room and kitchen all at once, then you surely need to evacuate the house for one night.  Most people stay at a hotel or at friend’s house, but others get creative and pitch a tent in the back yard or rough it out on the back porch or in the garage.  One couple we worked with even rented their own RV and parked it in their driveway for the night!  SEE OUR BED BUG HEATER RENTAL PACKAGES
How to get rid of bed bugs in my car or truck?
You are probably wondering… “Should I be worried about bed bugs getting in my car?”  The simple answer is, yes you should.  This is especially true if you have confirmed bed bugs have gotten into your home.  The good news is that it is usually much easier to deal with them inside a car versus inside an entire home.  If you have read through our website at all, you have learned that heat is what kills bed bugs instantly.  So the next question you ask yourself is… “We live in Florida, does a car get hot enough to kill bed bugs?” 
 
Summer Months
That answer depends:  In Tampa, Florida during the summertime, your car will easily reach 130F+ degrees when parked outside all day, with the windows up.  So thankfully, your car should be much less likely to develop a bed bug infestation during Tampa’s summer hotter months and the car will likely cure itself if the critters happen to find their way inside.  You shouldn’t need to use bed bug heaters in your car during this time.
 
Cooler Months
The rest of the year can be a problem. As you know, bed bugs hitchhike by nature, so they can easily crawl off your clothing, purse, backpack, etc., and nest underneath your driver’s seat or near a seam where plastic trim meets the carpet.  The colder months in Tampa will easily allow bed bugs to live in your vehicle and have a regular source of food, usually your legs. 
 
During colder months, you should seriously consider doing a bed bug heat treatment in your car. 
 
How Do You kill Bed Bugs In Your Car? 
  1. Clean it out and throw away all trash and debris.  Remove any personal belongings and thoroughly inspect them (but do not bring them into the house!)  
  2. Vacuum the entire car really well, paying close attention to the seats and where the plastic trim pieces meet the carpeting. 
  3. Place the bed bug heater on a flat surface, usually a folded down back seat, and secure the heater with bungee cords so it won’t move or tip over.  If you have a larger vehicle (like a van or SUV), consider using the heater and one air moving fan as well. 
  4. Plug in one or two heater element wires and route all wires through a cracked open window.  Place a towel along the window opening and gently close it, sealing the gap to eliminate heat escape as best you can. 
  5. Plug in all wires into the home’s electrical supply and use extension cords as necessary.  It is always a good idea to park as close to the house as possible! 
  6. Heat the car the same way as a room… run the bed bug heater until you have achieved the 120 degree bed bug kill temperature, then run it at least four more hours.  This process should go quite a bit faster than a room treatment. 
  7. After the treatment and cool down is complete, vacuum again and clean out the vacuum's collection bin or throw away the bag. 
  8. Consider heavily spraying a 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water mixture along all seams, nooks and crannies as a precaution.  You could also spray a pesticide, but do not let it make contact with an area you touch with your body.  Another messier option would be to lightly dust with diatomaceous earth into cracks, seams, cup holders, all upholstery and carpeting.  Be sure not to get the powder wet or it renders it useless.  SEE OUR BED BUG HEATER RENTAL PACKAGES
